One Nexgard chew starts killing adult fleas within 30 minutes but lasts one month, so a year takes 12 doses.

The cheapest flea box is often not the cheapest year: a $210 yearly flea shot can cost $78 less than twelve $24 monthly doses. What you really pay is the price per dose times the doses your dog needs in a year, so work out that number before you reach for the lowest price on the shelf.

When you shop for low cost flea treatment for dogs, look at what a full year costs, not one box. The prices here come from Low Cost Pet Vax’s flea/tick price page, read in October 2026.

Ask your vet before you start, stop or switch any flea, tick or heartworm product.

What low cost really means: price per dose times doses per year, so $210 can beat $24

Each product has two numbers: what one dose costs and how long it lasts. Divide 12 months by the months one dose lasts and you get doses a year. Multiply that by the price per dose and you get the year. The worksheet below does this sum for every priced option.

Low Cost Pet Vax lists its Bravecto prices as “starting at”, so treat them as the lowest each one goes, and it prices the Quantum shot by weight. Get a quote for your dog’s weight and run the same sum.

Monthly flea chews like Nexgard start working in 30 minutes but last one month

According to BudgetPetCare’s guide to cheap flea, tick and heartworm prevention, one Nexgard dose (active ingredient afoxolaner) “treats and prevents flea and tick infestation for one month.” The same guide says it starts killing adult fleas within 30 minutes and kills all of them within 8 hours.

The weak spot is the count. One month per dose means 12 doses a year, so you pay for it again and again. On age and size, Nexgard’s lower limit is 8 weeks old and 2 kg. Bravecto chewables’ is 6 months and 4.4 lb.

That makes the monthly chew the one of the two that fits a young puppy.

Prescription required: Texas clinics start at $24, PetMeds sells by the pill

Low Cost Pet Vax says, “All of our flea/tick prevention options are prescription medications.” It offers them in Dallas-Fort Worth, San Antonio, Houston and Austin. Check its clinic list before you plan around its prices.

An online pharmacy is another way to buy. PetMeds’ flea pills and oral medications category lists 162 dog products and 51 cat products. Some listings say “This item is sold per pill” and ask you to check the quantity.

Flea and heartworm combination products cost $360 to $384 a year

Low Cost Pet Vax lists two monthly options that also cover heartworm. Simparica Trio is $30 a month for large dogs, which is $360 a year. Credelio Cuattro is $32 a month, which is $384 a year.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) says some heartworm preventives also contain ingredients that work against intestinal worms, such as roundworms and hookworms, and other parasites such as fleas. It also says many products are approved to prevent heartworm in dogs, and all of them need a vet’s prescription.

Most of those are given monthly. The FDA also describes one product that is injected under the skin every 6 or 12 months, which works out to 2 doses a year or 1. Only a vet can give it. The FDA describes it as a heartworm preventive, so you still need a separate flea product unless your vet says otherwise.

Here’s the sum. Simparica Trio’s large-dog year ($360) is $150 more than the Quantum shot’s starting price ($210). The shot is priced by weight, so a large dog’s gap is $150 at most: $360 minus your dog’s quote. If a separate heartworm product costs less a year than that gap, the shot plus that product is the cheaper year.

Otherwise the all-in-one monthly chew wins.

Doses-per-year worksheet: a year costs $210 to $384 at listed prices

Prices come from Low Cost Pet Vax (read October 2026; its Bravecto prices are “starting at”). Dose length for Nexgard and Bravecto chewables comes from BudgetPetCare, and the injection schedule from the FDA.

Option One dose lasts Doses a year Prescription or vet visit Yearly cost (price per dose × doses)
Bravecto Quantum shot (flea and tick) 1 year 1 Prescription, given as a shot $210 × 1 = $210 ($17.50/mo)
Bravecto 1-Month 1 month 12 Prescription $24 × 12 = $288 ($24/mo)
Bravecto 3-Month 3 months (12 weeks) 4.33 (every 12 weeks) Prescription $74 × 4.33 = $321 ($26.75/mo)
Simparica Trio, large dogs (adds heartworm) 1 month 12 Prescription $30 × 12 = $360 ($30/mo)
Credelio Cuattro (adds heartworm) 1 month 12 Prescription $32 × 12 = $384 ($32/mo)
Nexgard 1 month 12 Ask your vet your quote × 12
6- or 12-month heartworm shot (heartworm, not fleas) 6 or 12 months 2 or 1 Only a vet can give it clinic price × 2 or × 1

Per day, the yearly shot costs $210 ÷ 365 = $0.58. The monthly Bravecto doses cost $288 ÷ 365 = $0.79.

Worksheet note: BudgetPetCare says Bravecto chewables protect for “3 months (12 weeks)” (8 weeks for Lone Star ticks). A 52-week year takes 52 ÷ 12 = 4.33 doses, so the 3-month tablet costs $74 × 4.33 = $321 a year. That is $33 more than the 1-month dose, not the $8 that four doses ($296) suggest.

If you order from a per-pill PetMeds listing, confirm the quantity and how long each pill lasts, then run the same sum.

The shot has two catches. Low Cost Pet Vax says Quantum “can take a bit longer to work,” and it is priced by weight from $210, so your dog’s quote may be higher. But it is the only option in the table that covers a full year of fleas and ticks with one dose.

Verdict: if your adult dog has no fleas today, ask your vet about the yearly shot and get a quote for your dog’s weight. At starting prices it is the cheapest flea and tick year on this list.

Who should skip the shot, and what to price instead:

  1. Your dog has fleas right now. Low Cost Pet Vax suggests starting with a topical such as Provecta Advanced or Vectra 3D, which you apply to the skin.
  2. Your puppy is under 6 months. Bravecto chewables are for dogs 6 months and older. Ask your vet about the shot, or price Nexgard (age limit above).
  3. You live outside the clinic’s Texas cities. Price your options at PetMeds, check the quantity, and run the worksheet sum.
  4. You want one dose for fleas, ticks and heartworm. Simparica Trio’s $360 a year is a large-dog price; Credelio Cuattro is $384. Quote your dog’s size first.

Staying safe on a budget: the label sets the dose and who to call

The EPA warns that pesticides on your pet can be passed to your children. It says to follow the label’s directions and precautions carefully.

If something goes wrong after a dose, the EPA says to start with the product label to see which agency to contact. Keep the box until the dose is finished.

FAQ

How long does a flea treatment last?

As long as its label says. In the worksheet, that ranges from one month (Nexgard, Bravecto 1-Month, Simparica Trio, Credelio Cuattro) to three months (Bravecto 3-Month) to a year (the Bravecto Quantum shot).

Do I really need to give my dog heartworm prevention?

That is your vet’s call, and it has to be. The FDA says every approved heartworm preventive for dogs needs a vet’s prescription. If your vet says yes, compare a combination product’s yearly price with your flea product plus a separate heartworm product.

Are flea collars a cheaper option?

Low Cost Pet Vax calls most flea collars ineffective, says the ones that work are generally the higher-priced options, and names Seresto as the only collar it recommends. No price in this guide is for a collar, so get a quote and ask your vet before you count on one.

Get one quote for your dog’s real weight, put it in the worksheet, and choose the cheapest year your vet agrees to. More breakdowns are in flea, tick and heartworm costs. For the vet bills that prevention doesn’t touch, see the plain checklist on whether pet insurance is worth it for dogs.
